Why we get a brain freeze Essay Example for Free

Why we get a brain freeze Essay Brain freeze occurs when something extremely cold touches the upper-palate (roof of the mouth). It normally happens when the weather is very hot, and the individual consumes something too fast. We all love Icey cold foods, especially on a ht summer day, but too much of it too fast can give us a real headache. Who hasnt had a bout of brain freeze immediately after they throw that blizzard back too fast. Brain freeze is something which most people have heard of, but which they actually know very little about. Generally it is the term given to the feeling you get after eating or drinking something extremely cold. It tends to occur when these foods and drinks are consumed fairly quickly and it is definitely not a very nice experience! So just what is it and why does it occur? What Happens What you may not know is that the pain actually occurs from the cold food and drink touching the roof of the mouth. It is the warming, afterwards, of the hard palate that causes the pain rather than the cold as what many people mistakenly think. So just why does it occur? Well the body is designed to keep as much heat in as possible, especially on a cold day. So when you breathe through your mouth for example, the body reduces the blood flow in the mouth in order to preserve heat. The way in which blood flow is reduced is that the diameter of the blood vessels is reduced. This is known as Vasoconstriction and once it has occurred, the blood vessels then return to normal which results in the dilation of the arteries within the palate. It is the nerves within the palate that translate the dilation as pain and that is why you experience brain freeze.Usually brain freeze only lasts a few seconds but it is possible that it could last for a minute or two. It is extremely rare for the pain to last any longer than that. Dealing with Brain Freeze When you experience it, it can be a really horrible experience. However, there are some things that you can do which are thought to help to relieve the pain. One of these things is to move your tongue to the roof of your mouth. This helps to warm the palate and similarly you could also try to drink water that has been left at room temperature. One thing to remember is that the temperature within the mouth does tend to heat up fairly quickly. So by covering your nose and your mouth while breathing, it could really help to speed up the warming process. The cold air that you breathe in will only make the condition worse. About Brain Freeze Studies have been carried out to see if there is a link between brain freeze and its sufferers. Not everybody experiences the condition; it is thought that only roughly 30% of the population suffers from brain freeze. Usually it is brought on after eating something such as ice cream or drinking a slurpee drink. There is also a theory that people who suffer from migraines may be more likely to suffer from brain freeze than anybody else. Slow Down Brain freeze is that little extra you get when you eat or drink your favorite cold foods. If you have been susceptible to brain freeze in the past, be careful when consuming these goodies, take your time and enjoy them. This way you can thoroughly enjoy that icey treat and avoid that icey headache. My Summary I did my summary on brain freeze’s. You can get a brain freeze by ice cream. You can also get a brain freeze by water ice or something that you ate that was cold. A brain freeze often occurs when something cold touches the top of your mouth.

Staff Recruitment and Selection Essay -- Business Management Studies

Staff Recruitment and Selection In this section I will be explaining and discussing the organisations (Southgate college) procedures for recruiting and selecting staff and also identifying the Key factors that have to be considered at every stage of this process. Procedures 1. Job analysis: is there a need for a vacancy? Either because: (i) The nature of the job has changed, which could result in restructuring hence the availability of more jobs. (ii) A person has left or been promoted, leaving an available space in their former position 2. If there is a vacancy a job description is complied: (i) The task of the job (ii) The behaviour to achieve these tasks So Southgate College will have to write a job description to show what the job is (i.e. Admissions Assistant) and what it involves. In the job description there must be a list of tasks required and what will be essential to do the job. 3. Person specification Characteristics and the qualities needed of the person needed for the job: (i) Physical make up: what should the jobholder look and sound like, Gender or ethnicity, generally the law does not allow the employees to specify. (ii) Qualifications: education, formal qualifications and experience (iii) Specific skills (iv) Hobbies and interests (v) Personality: temperament (vi) Personal circumstances The reason for the person specification is to find out more about the candidate and what the person is generally like. A person specification sets out the qualities of an ideal candidate. 4. Job advertisement: based on the applicant's personal profile Plus: 1. Wages and salaries 5. Holidays 2. Hours of work 6. Address telephone number 3. Perquisites 7. Closing date 4. Duties 8. Method of application: Application form Application form and c.v. Letter of application and c.v. 5. Drawing up a short list for interview: The short list consists of 4-5 people who best fit the person specification and the job description. There may be differences in age, experience, and qualifications. 6. Selection interviews: (i) Structuring the interview; depends on the nature of the job, size of the organisation. As Southgate College is a big organisation, interviews are conducted by a panel: Personal officer Head of departm... ...sight before actually applying for the job. The information written in these three documents are very important because in all the documents the information must be written accurately and also not misleading for the applicant e.g. the duties involved in the job. The information must be high quality for the applicant to be able to understand what is written and also to make sure the person knows what each document is telling them for example the applicant can not read a document which tells him a set of duties to do but the other document says something completely different. There is two ways of testing the applicant: 1. Informal method- this way of testing is based on an interview were questions are asked Through this method the employer will be able to find out what the person has to offer and what kind person he is on terms of e.g. appearance, attitude, body language. 2. Psychometric tests- this tests the person’s personality it will show the interviewers what the person is like generally. The questions must be checked before they can be asked the reason for this is to remove bad questions and also to remove social, racial or sex bias.

Black Bourgeoisie Essay

E. Franklin Frazier’s Black Bourgeoisie was more prophetic than many realized. Frazier, who addressed the burgeoning black middle class, expressed concern about the intra-class conflict vis-a-vis socioeconomic status of black folks. Frazier notes that the black middle class was in a rush by the 1960s to assimilate. During the Harlem Renaissance, even W. E. B. Du Bois â€Å"strategically included white judges on panels for their black literary competitions, in hopes that white approval would add luster to black achievements. † This shift that occurred was not a mass or universal one. The black middle class was still small and would not be catapulted until after the advent of Affirmative Action. According to the perspective of E. Franklin Frazier, the â€Å"Black Bourgeoisie† played an important role among American Negros for decades. Frazier’s study led him to the significant of â€Å"Negro Business† and its impact on the black middle class. Education was a major social factor responsible for emergence of the Black bourgeoisie. By fact, the net total number of the free Negroes in the first generation topped out at 37,245 with an estimated accumulation of 50,000,000 in real and personal wealth before the civil war. Free Negroes in southern cities undertook businesses in skilled labor such as carpenters, tailors, shoemakers, wheelwrights, bricklayers, butchers, and painters. The failure of the Freedmen’s Bank contributed to the slow development of the black middle class when Blacks put all their money into the Black banks and when they went under only forty percent of deposits were returned. Occupational differentiation is the change in work field for the Black class. A small professional group making up three percent of all workers had gradually become differentiated from the majority of Blacks. Occupational differentiation had proceeded slowly because Blacks were accustomed to the agriculture field and not only until the migrations to the North were had had they introduced to the industrial centers. In addition the Depression played a role in slowing up the process. Black-owned businesses are primarily service establishments simply because of the refusal on the part of white establishments to provide personal services for Negroes. The debate over true liberalism among blacks still exists. I have found the upper black middle class to be far more conservative and less active towards civil rights and social policy of late. I am concerned that the black bourgeoisie is willing to shift its focus away from the liberalism that put them in their position for racial acceptance. I believe integration is vital to a liberal society as noted by my neighborhood, friends, and place of employment; however, I do not think the black middle class should play the conservative card that carries with it values, attitudes, and behaviors that do not represent progress for all minority groups. Sure 90% of blacks vote in a solid block for the Democratic Party, but that block is not as tight as it used to be.

Graduate Degrees - More Common in Online Education 2019

The continuing demand for graduate degrees is growing, online schools are more appealing now that ever before to those returning to school. Bert Valencia is the vice president of distance education programs at Thunderbird, the Garvin School of International Management. Valencia said Thunderbirds Global MBA program requires students only spend four weeks in a classroom. Students can be located anywhere, as long as they can communicate they can be a part of the class, he said. Graduate degrees obtained at online universities and colleges have become more attractive because they provide the same level of education that a traditional university would, but from the comfort of your choosing. This has also become attractive to those with full time jobs and parents. To complete an online MBA education however, classes alone are not considered sufficient. Networking is also a big party of the MBA program. .udd16a3cdc936be33b33d733f16f2ee87 { padding:0px; margin: 0; padding-top:1em!important; padding-bottom:1em!important; width:100%; display: block; font-weight:bold; background-color:#eaeaea; border:0!important; border-left:4px solid #34495E!important; box-shadow: 0 1px 2px rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.17); -moz-box-shadow: 0 1px 2px rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.17); -o-box-shadow: 0 1px 2px rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.17); -webkit-box-shadow: 0 1px 2px rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.17); text-decoration:none; } .udd16a3cdc936be33b33d733f16f2ee87:active, .udd16a3cdc936be33b33d733f16f2ee87:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; text-decoration:none; } .udd16a3cdc936be33b33d733f16f2ee87 { transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; } .udd16a3cdc936be33b33d733f16f2ee87 .ctaText { font-weight:bold; color:inherit; text-decoration:none; font-size: 16px; } .udd16a3cdc936be33b33d733f16f2ee87 .post Title { color:#000000; text-decoration: underline!important; font-size: 16px; } .udd16a3cdc936be33b33d733f16f2ee87:hover .postTitle { text-decoration: underline!important; } READ Career in Sociology Potential Occupations for the Professional with a Sociology DegreeNetworking is so critical to success, Thunderbird requires that MBA students spend the first few weeks at the Glendale campus. After eight monghts they will then get to travel to Genva for a week. In addition, they may also spend a week in Beijing and a final week back at Thunderbird. If you have a job that requires travel, it is hard to pursue an MBA that doesnt require you to be at a specific location, Valencia said. The United States Federal Government - 1238 Words

Introduction The United States Federal Government collects taxes to finance various services to the citizens. According to Rubin 2013, â€Å"Budgeting implies balance between revenues and expenditures, and it requires some kind of decision-making process.† A budget associates responsibilities to these resources, ensuring that money is available to go to war, infrastructure and to help citizens in need. Politicians, as policymakers evaluate key decision-making processes about revenues and expenditures. My Role As An Educator - 1218 Words

The purpose of education is vast and serves many different objectives. Education is meant to cultivate a child’s intelligence, promote their social well-being, and encourage full development. This will be done by promoting learning through group and individual work, managing my classroom, creating a community within the classroom and school, and accepting while also incorporating diversity. My role as an educator will be to seek the involvement of all students within the classroom, consider each student’s opinion and learning styles, and most importantly teach from my heart. I believe that all children can learn and that learning, at an elementary age, should be social. Since learning does not always occur at the same time or in the†¦show more content†¦Each of the students will have confidence in their abilities, respect others, work cooperatively, and will be active in their learning. These goals will be within reach because of the classroom management, instructional strategies, and forms of assessment in the classroom. Students will be involved in making the rules of the classroom so that they know what is expected of them. The forms of instruction will vary in hopes to reach every child’s way of learning. My use of differentiated instruction and small group work will allow students access to many different ways to comprehend a topic, such as learning by doing and learning from their peers. In John Dewey’s work, My Pedagogic Creed, he explains the importance of learning by doing which is also learning from one’s own experiences. The differentiated instruction that I will implement in my classroom will allow the students to learn by doing because they will have many different options within the classroom. John Dewey also mentions the importance of the teacher being engaged in the classroom and with the students. This will allow students to develop social graces with their peers and also be a part of a su pportive learning environment. When students can learn from their own experiences, they are more likely to remember the information. The acceptance and integration of diversity would be of great importance in my classroom. History Of Food Consumption Android App - Myassignmenthelp.Com

Question: Discuss about the History Of Food Consumption App. Answer: Introduction Food consumption is a part of our everyday life. This can be attributed to the fact that eating is a routine thing done by everyone where people have breakfast, lunch and dinner and other meals and snacks in between the three meals. Keeping track of wat we eat in all our meals can be important as it can help us analyze and draw conclusions on what foods we are consuming in excess, what food we are consuming the right and recommended quantities and finally what kind of foods are insufficient in our diets. Information gotten from the analysis done on the history of food we consume can help us make very important life choices in terms of our health and lifestyle and help minimize lifestyle diseases like obesity, high blood pressure and diabetes. This document proposes the design and development of an android application that will enable users to keep track of the history of their food consumption. The application will enable users to save their daily consumption on a remote database through the application from which they can retrieve and review their history of food consumption. The data saved by the application will be very useful as it will help users to analyze their food consumption habits and from that, users can make important decisions to help them with their health. The application will also enable users to share the history of their food consumption either through dropbox, email or Google drive. Device capability requirements. The proposed application will run on the android platform so any many devices running on android will be able to run the application. The application will be developed using Android API 21 with a minimum SDK of Android 4.1 up to the latest version of android. For the application to run properly and efficiently, the user will have to have internet on their mobile phones as the phone is running. There is need for internet because, the application will store data in a remote server, and thus a user can retrieve his/her data using any phone with the application. For the performance of the application any phone with a dual core processor and a ram greater than 500MB will be able to run the application without any lagging or hanging. For the data to be stored in a remote database it has to be processed by a web server and then stored in the database. The web server will be running on Apache for it to process PHP as its the language that will be used to process the data gotten from the device before it is stored in the database. The database will run on MySQL to provide a relational structure which I easy to implement and easy to draw data from. Architecture. The architecture of the app comprises of the structured components of the application system that are part of the application system. The proposed application has three components; Mobile client Web client Database Mobile client The mobile client of the application is the application which comprises of the user interface running on the users mobile phone running on the android platform. The mobile client will enable the user to interact with the other components of the application. The mobile client will consist of all the user interfaces which will be designed and developed using JAVA. Web client The web client is the part of the application that is responsible for processing the data gotten from the mobile client or fetching the data from the database and processing it before sending it back to the mobile client. The web client will run on a web server capable of handling PHP scripts. The web client is completely abstracted from the user because it will not run on the users mobile device. Database The database is the component of the application system responsible for storing all the data. The database will be designed and developed using MySQL to come up with a good relational database capable of storing data consistently and with full integrity. The three components of the application system will interact consistently to bring out all the functionalities of the proposed application. The following architecture diagram show the three diagrams and the interaction happening between them. Figure 1: Architecture diagram Use case diagram Figure 2: Use case diagram The diagram above shows the use case diagram for an actor who is a user. The use case shows how the user will interact with the proposed system. Class diagram Figure 3: class diagram The diagram above shows the class diagram and all its components. The class diagram shows all the objects making the application system and how they interact with each other using which parameters. User interface and user interaction The user interface and user interaction will be defined in the mobile client. For the user interface, the application should be design using a consistent design throughout all the activities of the application. Consistent design means that the application should adopt and use colors consistently in all its design. This means that the colors used should not change with every page hence giving the user the feeling that they are not using the same application when they move form activity to activity. The font used should be visible for the user. The background color should be blend in perfectly with the color of the font used. For user interaction, the major aspect to be considered is that the application will run on an android smartphone which will use touch as the primary input. The application should be designed while considering all the aspects of ergonomics. This means that button should not be too small. The application should consider common user interaction events like drawing the menu by swiping from the left. References Booch, G. (1999). The unified modeling language user guide. Google Books.
